Here we are 6 months into our 12 month food photography challenge. Hard to believe that we have been doing this for so long.
This months challenge was intimidating for me, and for many reasons. First off I live in Alberta…no where near an ocean. Fresh fish is hard to come by, and seeing that I live fairly far north it can be very pricey.
I wasn’t sure what I was going to do; in fact I half heartedly joked around with my other group members about how I might just have to catch some fish myself. How else was I going to pull this off? Well my husband, our son and a friend of his decided to go fishing at Lesser Slave Lake one day a few weeks ago, so this was my opportunity to get my hands on some fresh fish. I gave my husband very specific instructions on what I needed to fulfill my challenge. Luckily he’s a good fisherman and the walleye or pickerel if you prefer to call them were really biting that day and we ended up with 2 lovely, fresh fish.
He brought them home whole and I went to work on setting them up to have their pictures taken. I tried a different location in my house than I normally do, just to mix things up a bit. I am pleased with how they turned out and may have to utilize this space more often.
Now that the fish were clean and had been photographed as much as I had wanted, the next challenge was to fix them for supper. I am not a big fan of fish, but my husband is and my son loves it to.
I decided to stuff one with a mixture of thinly sliced fennel, onion, dill, oil, salt & pepper. The second one my husband filleted and I breaded it with flour, seasoning salt and some pepper. I did the stuffed one on the BBQ while the other I fried in a pan with oodles, and oodles of butter. They both turned out well, I preferred the fried one myself and my husband ate all but a little bit of the stuffed one. So I guess they were a success.

Stuffed and baked. This was my husbands fish of choice.

And the breaded & pan fried version. My personal favourite.

And side by side![]()

That wraps up my fishing excitement for the next little while. I hope you enjoyed looking at them. Be sure to check out the rest of our circle to see what my friends came up with for this challenge.
